Visit Barnes: London’s Riverside Village on the Thames
Tucked along a peaceful stretch of the River Thames, Barnes feels like a village within London. Known for its riverside walks, historic pubs and welcoming community atmosphere, it’s one of West London’s most charming places to spend a day.
Visitors come to wander the river path, explore the independent shops and cafés around Barnes High Street, and relax on Barnes Green, a beautiful open space at the heart of the neighbourhood.
A visit to Barnes often ends along the river at our pub, one of London’s most iconic riverside pubs. With sweeping views of the Thames, a terrace that fills with sunshine and a menu built around seasonal British ingredients, it’s the perfect place to stop for a drink or a long lunch while watching the river drift by.
Riverside Walks & Things To Do in Barnes
One of the best ways to explore Barnes is simply by walking along the Thames. The river path offers some of the most scenic walks in London, with views of rowing boats, wildlife and historic riverside buildings.
Start your walk near Barnes Bridge, continue past the riverbank pubs and follow the path toward Hammersmith or Richmond for a longer stroll along the water.
After a walk along the river, many visitors head to our pub to enjoy a drink on the terrace or a meal overlooking the Thames, a tradition that has been part of Barnes life for generations.
Famous Annual Events in Barnes
Barnes is home to several much-loved events throughout the year that bring the community together along the river.
The most famous is the Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race, which reaches its dramatic finish line within view from our pub. Each year crowds gather along the riverbanks and terraces to watch the historic race as the boats cross the line.
Another highlight is the Barnes Fair, a summer fair held on Barnes Green. Dating back hundreds of years, it features live music, local stalls, food, rides and entertainment for families across the community.
These events are part of what makes Barnes feel special, a place where history, community and riverside life all come together.

The History Of The White Hart
Our pub has been part of the Barnes riverside for more than 300 years, welcoming travellers, locals and visitors along the Thames since the early 18th century.
The pub also holds a unique place in sporting history. Barnes was home to Ebenezer Cobb Morley, founder of Barnes Football Club and widely recognised as the father of modern football. In 1863, Morley helped write the first official rules of association football, which were created here in Barnes and would later shape the global game.
Today, our pub continues to be a meeting place for the community, a historic pub where riverside views, great food and good company come together.
